Are you deaf?

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Dear Friend,

Recently I saw 'Sweet Nothing in My Ear'. It's a movie about family in which the parent is arguing about big operation for their child to be able to hear again. The son has lost his hearing ability since he was four years old. This movie presentation was produced by Hallmark and shown in HBO.

The argument was raised because the mother (whose also deaf) disagree to perform the operation. She felt nothing wrong with being deaf as she herself and her parent came from a deaf family. While the father of the son really wants what he felt best for his son, the ability to hear again.

The movie plot the event in a court with some flashback to certain moment. At the end, we could see that the court was actually meant to decide custody right of the child. The different perspective from both the father and mother has grown so big 'till they decided to live separately.

On one side, the mother family insist that being deaf is different with being disabled. A deaf people can do as much as other normal people. While in the opposite, the father insist that he will do anything to make his son's life easier and that by giving him the operation to him so he could hear again.

Both want the best for their child, ironically they ended up giving the worst for him, which is to live separately. This movie remind me of my old question about life, if we want the best for all of us, why should we fight each other? The example of this irony can be seen anywhere around the world since the beginning of human race rule this earth. Everyone still remember the Civil War in U.S. happen because both North and South believe their perspective about slavery is the best one. And not to lessen my respect to Bush ex-government, the invasion to Iraq was executed because his government felt they know what best for Iraqi people, but is it really true?

Back to the movie, I think it's not only the mother and her family whose being deaf but all the character of the movie is deaf. And the loudest scream from the child can't be heard by them. Sometimes, we just close our heart and mind from everyone. At these time, no matter how your five senses (the eye and its friends) work perfectly, all doors was shut and we can't accept what we see, hear, taste, smell, or touch. In my personal opinion, being disabled is not the same with being blind, deaf, crippled, etc. Being disabled is when you shut your door of heart and mind.

Regardless of who you are, my friend... are you deaf? Or you can hear the most beautiful voices in this world? The voice of heart from your loved one...

With love,

Your new friend
